Georgian Chippendale Giltwood Mirror

18th century
Description

A George III Chippendale mirror in the Rococo taste; the original mirror plate set within a giltwood frame composed of C and S scrolls and crisply carved with acanthus leaves and bullrushes. The original mirror plate is beautifully aged and has a lovely soft bevel.

Circa 1760

This beautiful antique mirror exemplifies pieces designed in the Rococo style. There was a belief that designers should look to nature for inspiration and therefore there should be no straight lines in its design. The beautifully carved frame is composed of C and s scrolls carved to represent flowing acanthus leaves topped by a mythical Ho-ho bird. The mirror retains its original, charmingly aged mirror plate.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Fine joint lines through the carved scrolls: hand-assembled pierced timber carving.
Gesso layer showing fine surface craquelure: natural drying and shrinkage over time.
Gilding rubbed to the reddish bole beneath: handling wear on carved high points.
Soft hand-bevelled edge to the plate: early plate glass finishing.

This Georgian Chippendale wall mirror belongs to the Rococo style period and measures 152.5 cm high by 64.75 cm wide. The piece is formed from a gold giltwood frame containing an original glass mirror plate with a soft bevel and aged silvering. The carved frame includes a spread-winged bird finial at the top, along with acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, S-scrolls, bullrushes, and a pierced lower apron. In a modern interior, this wall mirror functions effectively when hung above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The decorative elements provide a classic English Country House aesthetic while retaining visible signs of historical age across the silvered plate and the gold leaf surface.

Georgian Chippendale mirrors are defined by intricate hand-carved wooden frames finished in gold leaf gilding, popularised in the mid-to-late 18th century. They feature Rococo ornamentation such as flowing acanthus leaves, openwork scrollwork, and architectural crests often featuring birds or shells.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods such as pine or lime for detailed carving, which was prepared with gesso layers and red bole clay. Genuine gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques, framing a hand-blown, mercury-silvered glass plate.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including mercury glass foxing, uneven hand-carved wood backing boards, and minor cracking in the gesso along joinery lines. Original gilding often shows dark bole clay showing through areas of surface wear.

A carved giltwood mirror functions as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece or a contemporary side console table. The detailed gold frame creates a visual contrast against minimalist walls, dark paint shades, or period wallpaper.

Dust the carved frame lightly using a soft dry brush, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that can dissolve water gilding. Glass cleaner should never contact the frame or seep behind the glass rim, as moisture damages vintage mirror backing.
