Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1870 Italian Grand Tour trinket box uses wood, hardstone, marble, and brass materials in a dark brown colour palette. The rectangular container displays a carved wooden border with textured rope mouldings around the lid, alongside a central pietra dura hardstone inlay portrait depicting an elderly man in spectacles reading a book with blue patterned fabric on his waistcoat. The exterior exhibits intricate carved surface details and a visible keyhole mechanism. Measuring 9 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, it provides compact storage for small personal items. The piece functions well as a decorative desk accessory or storage container in a home office or study. It complements traditional or eclectic interiors when placed on a desk, bookshelf, or side table, holding small trinkets while serving as a visual focal point.

FAQs

Pietra dura, meaning hard stone, originated in Renaissance Florence and involves embedding precisely fitted, polished semiprecious stones into a substrate to form detailed images or geometric patterns.

Craftsmen typically utilised slate or marble backings inlaid with jasper, agate, lapis lazuli, quartz, and chalcedony, housed within carved timber or gilt-bronze structures.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display micro-fine seams between stone components, natural mineral inclusions under magnification, hand-carved casing details, and signs of hand-tooling on the underside.

These decorative boxes function well placed atop a stack of books on a coffee table, displayed inside a curated cabinet of curiosities, or positioned on an executive writing desk.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or moisture that could compromise the organic adhesives holding the stone inlays.
