Exhibit Antiques has dated this Georgian Facet Cut Ale Glass to the Georgian era.
An 18th century facet cut ale glass dating to c1780.
Fine bridge cutting decorates the transition from the bowl to the stem, which is finished with diamond facet cutting above a conical foot.

Although decorative cutting such as egg-and-dart, OXO and swag designs can be found around the rims of late 18th century ale glasses, a continuous band of these elongated oval cuts is particularly unusual. We have been unable to find another example in our sold archive.

Historical Context
Facet cutting became increasingly fashionable on English table glass during the second half of the 18th century. As well as providing decoration, the multiple polished surfaces caught and reflected candlelight, giving the glass a brilliance and sparkle particularly suited to the increasingly elaborate dining tables of the Georgian period.

The cutting on this example is especially effective, progressing from the elongated oval rim cuts through the more complex cutting at the base of the bowl and finally into the sharply diamond faceted stem.
