Georgian Hop and Barley Engraved Facet Cut Stem Ale Flute

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, hop and barley-engraved facet cut stem ale glass dating from the late 18th century, c1770. This is the second time this glass has passed through our hands.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an extended rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 6.4 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with a single hop flower and with a single barley ear to verso. The bowl sits on a hexagonal facet cut stem. The stem leads to a conical foot that measures 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in diameter. The glass is 16.5 cm (6.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker to the underside of the foot for the Peter Eales collection.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian ale flute is a tall, narrow drinking vessel crafted during the eighteenth century specifically for serving ale or beer.

These glasses were hand-blown using lead glass formula, featuring wheel-engraved surface patterns such as hops and barley alongside diamond or hexagonal facet-cut stems.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit slight natural grey-purple tones in the lead metal, pontil scars on the base, irregularities from hand-cutting, and specific historic motif engravings.

Displaying these glasses in a lit glass-fronted cabinet, on a dining room sideboard, or integrated into a curated bar cart arrangement highlights the detailed facet cuts.

Clean hand-blown antique glass by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding high heat or dishwashers, and dry immediately with a lint-free cloth.
