Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A matched pair of Jugendstil armchairs designed by Heinrich Vogeler, produced by the Worpswede workshop around 1910. Constructed from dark stained oak with woven rush seats, these pieces display a rectilinear frame dominated by extensive bobbin-turned spindle work across the high backrests, the open armrests, and the lower stretches beneath the seats. The timber exhibits a deep dark brown colour with visible grain, while the spindles and supports feature rounded turned shapes and the frames show minor surface wear appropriate for their age. Measuring 110 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, these armchairs suit placement in a gentleman's library, a study, or a prominent living space as functional seating. They offer distinct architectural lines and authentic period craft suitable for interior settings that value historic European design.

FAQs

Jugendstil and Arts and Crafts furniture emphasizes handcrafted joinery, natural materials, and functional forms. Design elements typically feature simplified rectilinear silhouettes, expressive vertical timber spindles, and unadorned surfaces that highlight wood grain.

Chairs from this era are commonly crafted from solid native hardwoods such as dark-stained oak or beech. Construction relies on traditional mortise and tenon joints, turned vertical spindles, and hand-woven rush or cane seating surfaces.

Authentic period examples demonstrate traditional cabinetry techniques, natural surface patination, and proportional geometry. Look for original structural details, such as pegged joints, hand-spun rush weaving, and subtle hand-turned spindles without modern machine uniformity.

High-backed timber armchairs function as strong focal points in contemporary spaces. Positioned alongside minimalist upholstery or pared-back neutral walls, their architectural lines and rich dark timber create texture and historical contrast.

Dust oak frames regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain timber moisture. Keep natural rush seats free from excessive moisture, vacuum gently with a brush attachment, and avoid placing near direct heat sources to prevent drying.
