Under his influence, the textiles division became one of the most influential commissioning bodies in British design history. Tom Worthington‘s great skill was his eye for avant-garde design. For example, in 1951 Lucienne Day approached him with an abstract pattern called Calyx, which had been created for the Festival of Britain. Worthington was initially reluctant, but it went onto win international awards becoming a massive commercial success and begun a 25 year relationship with Day creating more than 70 patterns for Heals. He greatly encouraged young talent and Art School graduates, bringing many striking, modern prints into British homes, including designs by high profile designers, Barbara Brown, Peter Hall and Colleen Farr.
