Pair of Swedish Art Deco Bedside Cabinets in Satin Birch

1920 - 1940
Description

An extremely beautiful pair of Swedish Art Deco bedside cabinets in satin birch. They were recently imported from Sweden, they date from the 1930’s.

The quality is outstanding, they are beautifully made with absolutely stunning satin birch grain patterns throughout. There are also incredibly fine inlaid walnut designs on the lower door fronts, with lovely brass handles. They are a useful size with lots of storage space, the backs are nicely finished in solid elm, even though they are designed for use against a wall, they can be used as free standing side tables.

We have had them stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is superb throughout.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Swedish Art Deco bedside cabinets dates from 1930 and belongs to the Art Deco period. Constructed from satin birch and birch veneer with a golden brown finish, they display prominent natural grain patterns and dark foliage marquetry inlays on the lower cupboard doors. Each cabinet incorporates an open upper shelf, a single door fitted with a circular metal pull, and raised turned wooden feet underneath moulded plinths. The pieces measure 59 cm high by 41 cm wide and 33 cm deep. Such cabinets suit placement beside a bed in a principal bedroom or guest room, providing surface space on top, an open compartment for books, and enclosed storage within the lower cupboard. Their compact footprint also allows them to function as small side tables in a living room, hallway, or study.

FAQs

Swedish Art Deco, often associated with the Swedish Grace movement of the 1920s and 1930s, combines clean geometric forms with subtle classical motifs and light-coloured native timber veneers such as satin birch.

Pieces from this era typically feature structured softwood frames layered with figured satin birch or flame birch veneers, accompanied by small metal or brass handles and inlaid wood marquetry detailing.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristic honey-toned birch veneers with pronounced wavy grain patterns, precise joinery, simple turned legs, and understated stylized floral or classical marquetry motifs.

These compact cabinets function effectively as nightstands framing a bed, or as occasional side tables alongside modern sofas, complementing neutral colour palettes and minimalist scheme textures.

Maintain satin birch furniture by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a clear natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
