Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Chinoiserie side cupboard from 1930 is made from lacquered wood with a black and gold finish. It has rectangular panelled sections with raised linear mouldings outlining the upper shelf, central door, and lower drawer. The door displays hand-painted figures, foliage, and flowers, and opens via circular brass faceplates and hinges mounted on the right side. The lower drawer includes a curved drop handle in brass. Standing on stepped rectangular feet, the cabinet measures 76 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. It is in good used condition with minor signs of use to the finish and includes an open upper shelf, a small door, and a drawer. In a contemporary home, this compact storage unit functions well at the end of a sofa or serves as a bedside locker in a bedroom. Its narrow profile allows it to fit into restricted spaces while providing surface display area and enclosed storage. The black lacquer surface and oriental newspaper lining inside the compartments complement traditional or eclectic interiors. The piece suits spaces requiring extra organisation without occupying excessive floor area.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that incorporates Chinese-inspired artistic motifs, lacquerwork, and narrative depictions.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid timber treated with layers of dark lacquer, featuring hand-painted pigments, gilded accents, and brass hardware components.

Authentic examples feature raised lacquer technique, hand-drawn brush strokes rather than printed transfers, age-appropriate craquelure, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Position the piece as an accent feature alongside contemporary minimalist furnishings, using its dark finish and detailed artwork to create visual balance.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid silicone-based polishes, and keep the cupboard out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent cracking.
