Dense figured mahogany with softened edges: age and handling.
Outswept rear sabre legs: standard dining chair construction of the period.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A set of four nineteenth-century Regency dining chairs, dated 1830, constructed from rich brown mahogany. Each chair displays a carved and reeded top rail, a central carved mahogany splat with scroll motifs, and newly reupholstered seats covered in blue and white striped fabric. The structure stands on reeded turned tapering legs at the front and outswept legs at the back. Measuring 86 cm high by 48.5 cm wide and 43 cm deep, these sturdy chairs suit a dining room arrangement around a table for everyday meals or formal gatherings. The traditional design and timber tone blend smoothly into period and transitional interiors.

FAQs

Regency dining chairs, produced predominantly between 1811 and 1830, are characterised by classical Neoclassical influences, carved crest rails, reeded or sabre legs, and rich hardwood construction such as mahogany or rosewood.

Dense mahogany was the primary timber used due to its strength and ability to take fine carving, often paired with hand-cut frame joinery, traditional horsehair seat padding, and woven fabric upholstery.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed underside framing, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, natural timber patination from age, and carving styles consistent with early 19th-century pattern books.

These chairs pair effectively with minimalist modern dining tables or clean-lined modern spaces, where the warm wood tones and carved detailing introduce tactile contrast against neutral backdrops.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to avoid warping or cracking, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural direction of the grain.
