Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Chevron-matched satinwood veneers on the cupboard door: late nineteenth-century Sheraton revival cabinetmaking.
Turned and reeded tapering legs with carved collars: fine turn-of-the-century turning.
Cast brass ribbon-tied ring handle and backplate: fittings popular in the Edwardian period.
Barber-pole stringing around the top edge: careful decorative work from around 1900.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This Edwardian bedside cupboard stands in the Sheraton Revival style, constructed from satinwood in a warm golden brown colour with chevron parquetry veneer on the cupboard door. It has a shaped gallery back, a single drawer with a round brass drop handle, a cupboard door secured with a small brass ring pull, and slender fluted legs. The woodwork displays visible grain patterns and retains its original finish and soft patina. The piece is 81 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Such a cabinet functions well in a bedroom next to a bed to hold a bedside lamp, a book, and small personal items, or in a living room as a compact side table for display. The narrow proportions allow it to fit comfortably into smaller alcoves or tight spaces beside seating or sleeping furniture while providing concealed storage behind the panelled door.

FAQs

Sheraton Revival furniture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries draws inspiration from 18th-century classical designs. Key elements include lightweight proportions, refined geometry, delicate fluted legs, and extensive use of figure-rich satinwood veneers decorated with parquetry patterns.

Traditional bedside cupboards were constructed using joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and mortise-and-tenon frame assemblies. High-grade cabinet woods like satinwood were cut into thin veneers and arranged in geometric parquetry over solid timber frames, complemented by cast brass hardware.

Authenticity can be verified by examining construction details such as hand-finished drawer interiors, original brass hinges, drop handles, and age-consistent oxidisation on unexposed timber surfaces. Chevron or diamond-matched parquetry, hand-carved leg fluting, and natural patination further confirm period origin.

An antique satinwood cupboard functions effectively as a nightstand flanking a bed or as a standalone accent table in a hallway. The warm golden tones complement neutral plaster walls, linen textiles, and modern minimalist decor, providing tactile texture and contrast.

To maintain satinwood furniture, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain once or twice a year to preserve the patina.
