Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Trapezoid brass movement plates: standard German regulator manufacture from the 1860s.
Two-piece enamel dial with recessed centre: quality clockmaking of the mid to late 19th century.
Faux-rosewood graining on softwood: decorative treatment widely used across this period.
Solid pine backboard with hand-driven slotted screws: untouched original case assembly.
Old pencil inscriptions on the reverse: natural history of handling over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Black Forest regulator wall clock in the Vienna style dates from 1860. The timber case has a dark brown finish simulating rosewood, enclosing a glazed front door and a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals. Visible details include a brass pendulum, a brass weight, a turned wooden finial at the base, and a moulded cornice at the top. The single train movement incorporates a deadbeat escapement and maintaining power, operating without a chiming mechanism. The clock measures 100 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, offering a vertical timekeeping option for a narrow wall space in a gentleman's library, hallway, or study. It hangs securely on a wall to display the time and provide functional decor in a traditional interior. The original components remain intact, showing a polished brass finish on the pendulum and weight alongside old patination on the lacquered case. The movement has been fully cleaned and serviced for current use while retaining its historical character. Placed against a plain wall, the narrow profile allows installation in compact domestic areas where floor space is limited. The glass panel protects the interior mechanics while permitting a clear view of the swinging pendulum and descending weight as the clock operates throughout the day.

Originating in Austria in the early 19th century, a Vienna regulator is a weight-driven precision wall clock known for its glazed timber case, timekeeping accuracy, and long pendulum movement.

These clocks traditionally feature glazed timber cases constructed from mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, housing a brass movement, an enamel dial, and a polished brass pendulum.

Authentic examples typically feature weight-driven movements rather than spring drives, clear porcelain or enamel dials with Roman numerals, deadbeat escapements, and slim wooden cases with glass side panels.

Position the clock on a narrow wall space or above a console table as a focal feature, pairing dark wood tones with light background walls or classic architectural panelling.

Ensure the clock is mounted level on a solid wall, wind the weights consistently using the correct key, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
