This pair of French Art Deco bedside cabinets dates from 1920 and showcases a sophisticated pairing of materials. Each cabinet is constructed from warm brown burr walnut veneer with distinct figuring, set beneath an inset dark grey stone top. The visible design includes an open upper shelving section positioned above a single lower cupboard door. This door is fitted with a small square metal handle, and the cabinets stand upon tiered plinth bases with curved cut-out details near the floor. The dimensions measure 65 cm high, 44.5 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, providing compact storage capacity for a bedroom setting. These cabinets work well placed flanking a bed in a contemporary interior, offering both surface display space and concealed bedside storage.

FAQs

Art Deco bedside cabinets, popular during the 1920s and 1930s, feature clean geometric silhouettes, rich figurative veneers such as burr walnut, and functional layouts often incorporating open shelves, cupboards, and stone tops.

Cabinet makers during the Art Deco era frequently used highly figured wood veneers like burr walnut and mahogany over solid timber frames, combined with stone or marble tops and metal hardware made from brass or chrome.

Authentic pieces exhibit geometric proportions, book-matched wood veneers, original metal hardware, and traditional joinery techniques like hand-cut dovetails within drawer and cupboard constructions.

Position these cabinets against neutral wall tones to showcase the walnut grain, and accessorise with sleek contemporary table lamps to contrast with the period woodwork.

Maintain walnut surfaces by dusting with a microfiber cloth and applying a clear natural beeswax periodically, while stone tops should be wiped clean with a damp cloth using mild pH-neutral soapy water.
