This 1930 English garden armchair by Angraves Invincible of Leicestershire follows an Art Deco style, constructed from woven cane, rattan, and bamboo in a natural tan colour. The structure incorporates sweeping curved bentwood arms, a slotted notched reclining mechanism on the backrest, and an integrated pull-out footrest with a raised end loop handle. Visible details include tightly woven cane seating panels, a multi-tiered adjustable wooden support brace behind the rake backrest, and sturdy cylindrical framework legs joined by low stretchers. It measures 87 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 161 cm deep. Practical for placement in a sunlit conservatory, on a patio by a pool, or within a garden seating area, this piece provides an adjustable reclining posture for relaxation. The natural woven finish adapts easily to various outdoor and semi-protected interior spaces, blending traditional wicker craftsmanship with comfortable lounging design.

During the 1930s, lightweight woven cane and rattan furniture became widely popular across Europe and the UK for outdoor relaxation, conservatories, and sunrooms. Manufacturers such as Angraves of Leicester produced durable, ergonomically contoured loungers utilizing steam-bent frames and intricate weaving techniques.

These chairs typically feature a primary frame constructed from steam-bent rattan or bamboo poles, bound with rattan peel ties. The seat, backrest, and footrest surfaces are filled with fine woven cane or split rattan webbed over supportive structural framing.

Authentic pieces display hand-wrapped cane bindings at joinery points, age-consistent patination on natural fibers, and mechanical features like notched wooden or rattan backrest adjusters. Look for original maker metal badges, stamped labels, or characteristic regional weave styles.

A vintage wicker lounger functions well in sunlit conservatories, covered verandas, or airy living rooms. Pair the natural texture with neutral linen cushions, indoor botanical displays, and timber side tables to complement organic modern aesthetics.

Keep woven furniture indoors or under shelter to prevent rain damage and excessive drying from direct sunlight. Dust regularly using a soft brush, and clean gently with a damp cloth, applying clear wax or boiled linseed oil sparingly to maintain fiber elasticity.
