Description

A real rarity. A real 18thc venetian " lacca" wall mirror the frame in completely original condition, the mirror replaced .

It measures 70cms h by 40cms w and is decorated with the italian version of far eastern figures etc

We are dating as around 1780 but could be earlier.

The biggest suprise is its condition slightly faded but completely intact!

The only tiny loss of lacquer is pictured but it is not visible looking straight on .

A great item probably from a great house of the era whose owners embarked on the " grand tour" of europe

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Venetian lacca mirrors from the 18th century are characterised by polychrome painted decoration on gesso and wood, often featuring chinoiserie or pastoral motifs inspired by Asian lacquerware popular in trade at the time.

These pieces typically employ carved softwoods or hardwoods as a base, built up with layers of gesso and size, which is then hand-painted, gilded with gold leaf, and varnished.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate hand-carving techniques, genuine craquelure in the paint and gesso layers, and mercurial or hand-silvered glass with oxidation consistent with age.

Such ornate items serve as focal points when mounted above contemporary mantelpieces or console tables, creating a deliberate contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity levels, avoidance of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without chemical cleaning agents.
