Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Stencilled size numbers on the top backboard: French workshop practice of the 1800s.
Leaf finish rubbed through to red clay: many decades of dusting and handling.
Horizontal pine backboards with natural shrinkage gaps: original timber drying over more than a century.
Scattered dark speckles in the glass plate: oxidising of old silvering.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large nineteenth-century nineteenth-century French Louis Philippe mirror is made from wood and gesso with a silver gilt finish and a glass plate. The rectangular frame has rounded upper corners, an etched cross-hatch pattern across its wide face, and a beaded inner moulding bordering the glass. Signs of age include a nicely rubbed and patinated surface with visible wear to the silver gilt, along with the original old mercury glass plate and original old back boards. The piece measures 132 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Such a mirror works well in most interiors, functioning effectively placed above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or bedroom to reflect light and add a traditional French chateau decorative accent to the wall.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe between 1830 and 1848, these mirrors are characterised by clean rectangular silhouettes with rounded upper corners, understated mouldings, and leaf gilding.

Traditional pieces were constructed with a solid timber core covered in gesso and clay bole, finished with hand-applied silver or gold leaf, and fitted with glass.

Authentic examples feature original timber backboards, subtle wear or coloured bole showing through the gilding, minor foxing on the reflective surface, and hand-etched geometric detailing on the frame moulding.

These mirrors function effectively positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, mounted over a dining room sideboard, or leaned against a focal wall to reflect light and add architectural structure.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding water, commercial solvents, or liquid polishes that can lift delicate gilding or dissolve gesso.
