Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Wide bevel on the mirror glass: typical Edwardian dressing-table plate.
Small dark spots across the silvering: natural oxidisation of early twentieth-century glass.
Ribbon swags painted over ribbed silk: decorative boudoir taste around 1900.
Marbled paper reverse with easel strut: construction for table or wall use.
Mellow toning and light rubbing to silk edges: over a century of handling.

This unusual wall mirror dates from the 1900 period and exhibits a Neoclassical style. The piece comprises a wooden base covered with silk, displaying a warm gold colour palette combined with painted rococo-manner motifs, hand-painted floral swags, ribbon bows, printed applique panels, and central medallions. It surrounds an original bevelled glass pane within a wide rectangular frame, showing aged speckling on the reflective surface and minor surface blemishes. The mirror measures 49.5 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a modern interior, the mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a hallway, dining room, or living room. It functions effectively as a wall-mounted decorative accessory, bringing French chateau character to a domestic setting. The construction incorporates a marbleised paper backing, allowing versatility for placement according to individual decorative schemes.

FAQs

Painted silk mirrors emerged during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Europe, combining textile craft with mirror manufacture. Silk panels were detailed with fine gouache or watercolour illustrations before being mounted under glass or set into timber mouldings to create refined wall decor.

These frames typically consist of a solid timber structure overlaid with woven silk fabric. The fabric is decorated using specialized paints or inks and is framed alongside silvered or bevelled glass, often accented with gilding or thin wood trim to secure the edges.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age on the textile, such as gentle fading, foxing, or slight surface wear. The paintwork displays fine hand-brushed detail rather than modern printed dot patterns, and the mirror glass often exhibits historical oxidation or desilverisation.

Position the mirror above a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to create a focal point. Pair it with simplified contemporary furniture to highlight the detailed pattern of the frame without cluttering the visual space.

Keep the mirror away from direct sunlight and humid environments to prevent silk degradation and paint fading. Clean the glass carefully with a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring liquids do not seep into the frame borders where the silk is mounted.
