A Mendlesham armchair is a distinct regional variant of the English Windsor chair, originating from Suffolk, typically characterised by a square-backed design with a pierced splat and spindle details.

They were traditionally constructed using a combination of native timbers, frequently featuring a solid elm seat combined with beech, ash, or fruitwood for the spindles, legs, and framework.

Authentication relies on examining traditional construction methods, such as wedged through-tennong joints, adzed seat shaping, timber shrinkage patterns, and appropriate tool marks indicative of period craftsmanship.

This seating option functions effectively as an accent piece in contemporary living spaces, providing textural contrast against minimalist decor or pairing naturally with rustic dining tables.

Maintenance involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and dusting gently with a dry cloth.
