A garniture set typically consists of a central mantel clock accompanied by matching side ornaments, such as candelabras or urns, designed to create a symmetrical display on a fireplace mantel or sideboard during the 19th century.

These sets were traditionally cast in bronze or brass, utilising fire gilding (ormolu) or chemical patination to create contrasting dark bronze figures and bright gold-toned decorative mounts.

Authentic pieces often feature maker stamps, such as Japy Freres, engraved on the brass clock mechanism backplate, alongside sequential serial numbers and hand-cast components that display minor tool marks characteristic of period manufacturing.

Positioning the clock and its matching candelabras as a focal point on a mantelpiece or a large console table adds a layer of classical symmetry, contrasting sharply with minimalist contemporary furnishings.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding all chemical solvents, abrasive polishes, or water, as these can strip the delicate historic fire gilding or alter the original bronze patination.
