Description

This is a great 19th century burr root  table snuff box.  The base has an integral wooden hinged lid, which when opens shows a makers stamp  Geo Sinclair. George Sinclair worked in Edinburgh around 1820-1840.

Burrs occur on many trees, most commonly at the junction of the trunk with the ground or root. They are caused by a number of small shoots which are unable to break out, and form an interwoven, contorted but unusually stable mass. They can be very ornamental.

It measures approx 10cm l x 9.5cm w at the widest section.

Date of Manufacture

Opus Antiques has dated this Burr Root Snuff Box to the 19th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Treen refers to small, functional wooden objects made before the mass production era, often hand-turned or carved from local timbers for domestic or personal use.

These items were typically crafted from the dense, highly figured burls or roots of trees such as walnut, briar, or boxwood, valued for their intricate grain patterns and durability.

Authenticity is determined by examining the natural patination, hand-carved tool marks, snugness of fit, and the distinct organic irregularities inherent in true root wood and burr formations.

Small treen pieces add organic texture and historical interest when displayed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or mantelpiece, contrasting well with clean modern lines.

Preserve wooden treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight and dramatic humidity changes, applying occasional applications of microcrystalline wax to nourish the surface without damaging the patina.
