Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement. They were designed to house weights and pendulums securely while providing accurate timekeeping in domestic and public spaces.

Traditional longcase clocks are constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring joinery techniques appropriate to their period. Movements typically comprise brass gear trains, steel pivots, and lead or iron weights.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the integration of the movement with the dial and case, checking for period-appropriate hand-cut screws, wood shrinkage patterns, and consistency in the wear of the mechanical components.

An antique longcase clock can serve as a focal point in a hallway, living room, or study, contrasting effectively against minimalist walls or complementing traditional architectural features.

Longcase clocks require placement away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and dampness to protect the timber and mechanism. Professional servicing of the movement is recommended every few years to ensure reliable mechanical operation.
