Georgian dressing mirrors became popular during the 18th century as personal grooming and dressing habits evolved among the upper and middle classes. These mirrors were typically placed on top of chests of drawers or dressing tables in bedrooms and dressing rooms.

Authentic pieces from this period were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, often featuring fine crossbanding, boxwood stringing, and veneer. The base frequently incorporated small dovetailed drawers, while the mirror plate itself was supported by shaped upright arms with brass pivot screws.

Authentication relies on examining the construction details, such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawers, the presence of secondary woods like pine or oak, and the characteristics of the glass, which may show subtle imperfections or be a replacement. The patination of the wood and the oxidisation of original brass hardware also provide key clues to age.

This piece works well placed upon a sideboard, mantelpiece, or chest of drawers to add warmth and classical proportion to a contemporary scheme. Its rich timber tones contrast effectively against neutral walls or modern minimalist furniture.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying a pure beeswax polish to nourish the timber. Avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and the veneer from lifting.
