Victorian boxes, popular during the 19th century, frequently feature rich exotic veneers like burr walnut, brass escutcheons, and meticulous joinery intended for middle- and upper-class domestic utility.

These pieces were typically constructed with a secondary softwood or hardwood carcass, overlaid with highly figured decorative veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or coromandel, and finished with brass hardware and velvet or silk interiors.

Authenticity is usually determined by inspecting the hand-cut dovetail joints, the presence of old secondary woods, hand-beaten brass screws, natural patination of the timber, and traditional paper or fabric linings rather than modern adhesives.

An antique box can be displayed closed on a surface such as a chest of drawers, coffee table, or desk to add texture and historical contrast to a contemporary room scheme.

Burr walnut should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and lifting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate wax polish maintains the finish.
