Description

DESCRIPTION

This is a good Regency sewing table with original green and gilt painted decoration. The top with a classical scene above a frieze decorated with painted panels of flowers and birds, above a lower tier, raised on a quatreform base with original brass castors. The whole green painted with gilt decoration of flowers and ribbons.

DIMENSIONS

73cm high x 49cm wide x 33.5cm deep

CONDITION

There marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. There is paint loss throughout, particularly to one area of the top and generalised elsewhere, mainly around the joints between different sections of timber. There is a small loss to the moulding around the edge of the lower tier. There are some historic repairs to the supports and one of the feet, and the central support has been re-glued into the lower tier. The original sliding work bag is not present. There is slight play in all joints but the piece appears sound. There is craquelure to the painted finish. The painted decoration is of fine quality and has been stabilised to slow down further paint loss. A piece of this age and quality of the original painted finish is rare to the market.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency furniture, spanning the late 18th to early 19th century, is characterised by classical Greco-Roman influences, elegant proportions, painted finishes, and gilded ornamentation.

These tables were typically crafted from native timbers such as beech, pine, or mahogany, which served as a stable base for detailed hand-painted finishes, japanning, and gold leaf highlights.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-accurate joinery, hand-mixed pigments showing natural ageing and craquelure beneath a shellac or varnish, and hand-gilded details rather than modern metallic foils.

Position the piece as a functional accent next to a sofa or armchair, allowing its painted motifs and colour to complement neutral upholstery and textured surroundings.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations. Clean exclusively with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid chemical polishes that can degrade historical varnishes.
