The Empire style, originating in early 19th-century France, draws heavily from classical Roman, Greek, and Egyptian motifs, featuring symmetrical proportions, gilded surfaces, and architectural elements like columns and laurels.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden base, often pine or gesso-coated softwood, applied with a layer of chalk-based gesso, smoothed, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf or gilt paint.

Authentic pieces generally display age-related crazing in the gesso, hand-carved detailing with minor inconsistencies, foxing or oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and period-appropriate joinery on the reverse.

An ornate gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when contrasted against minimalist walls, or positioned above a simple mantelpiece, console table, or powder room basin to add reflective light and classical texture.

Dust gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or microfiber cloth. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or commercial polishes, as moisture and harsh agents can permanently strip the delicate gold leaf and gesso layer.
