A tea caddy is a small box or chest historically used to store dried loose-leaf tea safely under lock and key when tea was an expensive luxury commodity during the 18th century.

These pieces were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or satinwood, frequently complemented by cast brass carrying handles, escutcheons, and internal foil or paper linings.

Authentic items often feature period-correct joinery such as dovetailing, hand-cut brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and timber displaying genuine age-related patination rather than artificial distressing.

Positioning this piece on a console table or sideboard adds historical texture and sophisticated warmth, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist furniture.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying traditional beeswax, avoiding direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent wood splitting.
