This 19th-century French mantel clock dates from 1850 and follows a Louis XV design. Constructed from mercury fire gilded bronze ormolu, porcelain, white Carrara marble, enamel, and glass, the piece displays a gold colour scheme alongside a blue porcelain plaque with a pink and white cherub motif. The round enamel dial carries black Roman numerals and blue Arabic numerals, mounted within a fluted drum casing framed by ornate gilt scrollwork and supports. An oval Sèvres-style painted porcelain panel depicting a cherub sits centred on the serpentine-shaped marble base above four ornate bun feet, complemented by convex glass and finely fretted gilt hands. The clock measures 29 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. In a modern interior, the clock sits centrally upon a mantelpiece, living room sideboard, or study desk to display the time and strike the hours and halves on a bell. The interior mechanism includes a French eight-day movement with an original pendulum, signed on the back plate by retailer Martin Baskett and Martin of Cheltenham. The gilded bronze casing shows clean surfaces with minor wear on high spots, while the white enamel dial exhibits light hairlines. The polished marble base includes a small repair to the rear left corner, completing an authentic antique mantel clock intended for display and functional timekeeping.

French ormolu clocks are distinguished by cast bronze mounts finished with a gilt technique known as ormolu, frequently incorporating hand-painted porcelain panels or marble bases. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these timepieces served as functional horological instruments and decorative statements in grand interiors.

These timepieces typically feature mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu), white enamel dials, hand-painted Sevres-style porcelain plaques, and white or black marble bases. The internal mechanical movements were cast in brass with steel pinions.

Authentic French ormolu clocks feature heavy, hand-chased gilded bronze mounts rather than lightweight stamped brass, often marked with maker stamps or serial numbers on the back movement plate. Dials are frequently signed with Paris makers, and porcelain inserts display hand-rendered detail.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble console, or dark wood sideboard to create a focal point. Paired with minimalist modern artwork or simple glass vases, the gilded metalwork provides a striking stylistic contrast.

Dust the metalwork gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical cleaners that strip the original gilded layer. Mechanical clockworks should be professionally inspected and lubricated by a qualified horologist every three to five years.
