Description

A large and impressive antique mahogany and parcel gilt overmantle mirror. This was made in England, it likely dates from around the 1890-1900 period.

It is of very fine quality, with beautifully carved fretwork around the top edges and gorgeous pierced parcel gilt carving in the centre of the top. The glass has bevelled edges and also has borders of parcel gilt moulding.

The frame is in very good condition, we have just had this re-polished. There is no surface damage to the glass, there is some spotting and wear to the silvered backing here and there, most noticeably at the top of the central section.

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative looking glass historically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, often featuring architectural framing.

Traditional frames were constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently accented with hand-applied gold leaf or parcel gilding, and fitted with silvered sheet glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-cut timber joinery, foxing or oxidisation on the original mirror plates, and traditional gesso applications beneath the gilding layer.

This piece can be positioned above a fireplace or styled on a large wall to reflect natural light and create a sense of scale and depth in a room.

Maintain the item by dusting the wooden frame with a dry cloth and cleaning the glass with a non-ammonia solution, avoiding direct exposure to moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations.
