Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in Britain following the introduction of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670. They evolved from wall-mounted clocks into tall, floor-standing cabinets designed to protect the pendulum and weights from dust and disturbance.

These clocks are typically constructed from local and imported hardwoods such as oak, walnut, mahogany, and sometimes pine beneath veneers. Traditional cabinet-making techniques involve dovetail joints, hand-cut joinery, and brass movements featuring iron or brass gears and hand-painted dials.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the movement for hand-filed teeth, the dial for hand-painted details or genuine engraving, and the timber for natural ageing, shrinkage cracks, and original construction methods rather than modern fixings.

A grandfather clock serves as a focal point in contemporary spaces when placed against a neutral wall, allowing its architectural timber grain and classic dial to provide a contrasting traditional element to minimalist or modern decor.

Preservation involves keeping the clock away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp environments to protect the wood and veneer. Professional mechanical servicing every few years ensures the internal gears remain clean and functioning correctly.
