Description

A Georgian early Tunbridge Ware circular puzzle/trick box. Beautifully made, both the top and bottom of this circular box have an inlaid yew wood disc to the centre and edged with a  futher  circular border.. There is an incised line decoration on the outside of the box to make it look like a lid that pulls off. To open this box however you need to push the central section out of the dummy ring first and then the lid of the central box pulls off.

A real novelty piece, beautifully made with precision. It would have been used to store snuff, coins etc in.

FAQs

A Georgian trick puzzle box is a small, cleverly constructed container from the 18th or early 19th century that requires a specific sequence of secret movements or hidden catches to open, traditionally used for holding snuff, stamps, or small trinkets.

These boxes were typically hand-crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, burr walnut, or fruitwoods, often featuring intricate inlay, banded edgings, and precisely fitted sliding panels or hidden pins.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails or joinery, natural patination from handling, historical tool marks, and organic wear consistent with age, rather than modern machine precision or synthetic glues.

Placed subtly on a desk, bookshelf, or coffee table, an antique puzzle box serves as an interactive decorative object that adds historical texture and tactile curiosity to a contemporary space.

Preserve the wood by keeping the box away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to maintain the natural finish without damaging the antique surface.
