FAQs

French bedside cabinets, often referred to as commodes de nuit, gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving to house chamber pots and later personal items as domestic comforts increased.

These cabinets are typically constructed from solid timbers such as oak, pine, or walnut, frequently featuring hand-carved details, dovetailed joints, and inset marble tops designed for durability and hygiene.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery like hand-cut dovetails, natural wear patterns on the painted or polished surfaces, historical tool marks, and appropriate oxidation on metal hardware.

Pairing antique cabinets with minimalist contemporary lighting and clean-walled backdrops creates a striking balance, allowing the historical craftsmanship and texture of the wood and marble to stand out.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical cleaners or excessive moisture. Protect marble surfaces with coasters and treat the timber with microcrystalline wax periodically to maintain the finish.
