This Victorian music box is a rectangular cylinder case made from burr walnut veneer with boxwood inlay stringing and ebonised moulding around the edges. The timber displays warm brown tones with a polished finish, complemented by dark ebonised wooden feet and trim, and small round metal screws or fixings on the front panel. It measures 15 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, offering a compact ornamental shape suited for placement on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library, study or living room today. The interior cylinder mechanism has been thoroughly restored in a specialist workshop to play clear Victorian musical airs without hymns or marches.

A Victorian Swiss cylinder music box is a 19th-century mechanical musical instrument that plays tunes via a revolving brass cylinder studded with pins that pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb, housed in a decorative wooden case.

These pieces were typically constructed with hardwood cases featuring fine timber veneers such as burr walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often accented with boxwood stringing, fruitwood marquetry, ebonised borders, and internal cast iron or brass mechanisms.

Authentic period examples feature hand-machined brass movements, heavy steel combs with individual or group teeth, period-appropriate timber patination, hand-cut dovetail joints, and often tune sheets printed in French or English affixed inside the lid.

An antique music box functions as a refined tabletop accent, ideally placed on a sideboard, console table, or library shelf alongside books, brass objects, and framed prints to introduce historical texture.

Keep the object in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting. Apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to the timber surfaces, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced regularly by a specialist conservator.
