This is an antique French Louis XVI style bedside table made of walnut, marble, and brass, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1840. The piece displays rich caramel hues with fine grain interest in the select walnut stocks, complemented by a white marble top and golden brass accents. Details include a pierced brass gallery edging the marble plinth, a single wide drawer positioned over a marble-lined cabinet, tapering pilasters, and fluted legs inlaid with brass gadrooning beneath gilt collars, ending in brass-capped circular feet. An undertier sits between the legs. The table measures 89.5 cm high, 40.5 cm wide, and 40.5 cm deep. In a modern home, it serves as a practical bedside nightstand or an accent piece positioned in an empty corner for display. The cabinet stores small personal items, while the surface and lower shelf accommodate lamps or decorative objects. The solid construction and compact footprint make it suitable for bedrooms and compact living spaces alike.

FAQs

19th-century French bedside tables, often termed tables de chevet, are characterised by slender proportions, inset marble tops to protect against spills, and refined cabinetry elements such as brass galleries, small drawers, and enclosed cupboards.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilised fine hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, and kingwood, often complemented by white or veined marble tops, gilt-brass or bronze gallery rails, and cast brass mounts.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, hand-turned or carved fluted legs, original pierced brass rims with natural patination, and age-appropriate wear to internal timber surfaces.

These versatile pieces work as traditional nightstands flanking a modern upholstered bed, or as accent side tables in living spaces, hallway nooks, and reading corners.

Clean the marble top with a soft, damp cloth and neutral pH stone cleaner to prevent etching from liquids. Dust the walnut veneer with a dry microfibre cloth and polish with natural beeswax, avoiding harsh chemicals on brass mounts.
