The Rococo style emerged in 18th-century France and is characterised by asymmetrical designs, C-scrolls, S-scrolls, and organic motifs such as foliage and shellwork, which carried over into 19th-century revival pieces.

Giltwood frames are traditionally constructed from softwoods like pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, onto which thin sheets of gold leaf are applied using a water-gilding or oil-gilding technique over a prepared bole layer.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand-carved wooden details rather than modern cast resin, genuine hand-applied gold leaf showing craquelure or oxidisation, and older mirror plates with slight silvering degradation or bevelled edges.

An antique giltwood mirror can serve as a striking focal point above a minimalist mantelpiece or console table, creating a deliberate juxtaposition that adds warmth, texture, and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush or feather duster. Avoid using commercial cleaning sprays, water, or abrasive cloths, as moisture and harsh chemicals can damage the delicate gold leaf layer.
