A skeleton clock is a timepiece designed with open-worked plates and bridges to reveal the intricate internal gear train and mechanical movement, typically housed beneath a protective glass dome.

These clocks are predominantly constructed from polished brass or gilt bronze for the movement and dial frame, mounted on a wooden base such as mahogany, walnut, or burr wood, and enclosed by a hand-blown glass dome.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-cut brass gears, the presence of fusee or spring-driven mechanical movements, hand-painted or enamel chapter rings, and signs of age such as oxidation and minor wear on the wooden base.

Position the clock on a prominent surface like a mantelpiece or bookshelf where its transparent glass dome and exposed mechanics can catch the light, serving as a focal point in a study or living room.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and moisture to protect the wooden base and prevent tarnishing of the brass. The delicate mechanical movement should be serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
