The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mainstream Victorian design, promoting the philosophy of art for arts sake with simplified lines and often ebonised finishes.

These pieces typically feature ebonised or painted hardwoods such as beech or birch, combined with natural rush or cane woven seating, utilising traditional joinery and turned spindles.

Authentic pieces often show period-appropriate wear, hand-turned wooden components, traditional pegged or mortice and tenon joinery, and genuine hand-woven rush seats rather than synthetic substitutes.

These chairs provide a striking contrast when placed around a contemporary dining table or used as standalone accent pieces in a hallway or bedroom to add historic character.

Maintain these chairs by keeping them away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning the wood with a soft dry cloth, and conditioning the rush seating sparingly.
