Description

This Pair of French Marquetry Bedsides are both extremely stylish and very useful. The Tulipwood veneer is inlaid with intricate floral marquetry. The elegant legs are of delightful flowing form, and the serpentine shaped fronts add further interest.

With ormolu mounts to the front toes and delicate decorative handles, that work so well together. The oak lined dovetailed drawers offer good storage and are free running.

Presented in fully restored condition, they would work so well as a pair of bedsides or indeed a pair of lamp tables.

French marquetry is a decorative technique where pieces of wood veneer are applied to a structure to form intricate floral or geometric designs, highly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces traditionally utilise a carcase of oak or pine, surfaced with fine veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, walnut, and fruitwoods, often accented with gilt-bronze or brass mounts.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut veneers showing slight irregularities, traditional joinery methods such as dovetailing in the drawers, and natural age-related patination of the wood.

They can be used as contrasting accents against minimalist modern decor, pairing the intricate wood grain and floral motifs with clean-line furnishings to create visual depth.

Maintain antique veneer by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural waxes.
