FAQs

The balloon back style originated during the 19th century, characterised by an oval or circular continuous wooden backrest that resembles the shape of a balloon, often featuring carved scrollwork.

These chairs were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, featuring traditional joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, and upholstered drop-in or sprung seats.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery marks, traditional upholstery methods, and natural patina consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques.

They can be paired with a contemporary minimalist dining table to create a deliberate contrast between modern clean lines and period craftsmanship, or used as occasional seating in a living room.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoid direct sunlight to protect the upholstery fabric, and keep the furniture away from excessive moisture and heat sources.
