Scottish penwork, also known as pen-work or ink-work, is a decorative technique popular in the 18th and 19th centuries where intricate designs were hand-drawn in ink onto a prepared wooden surface and subsequently varnished.

Antique snuff boxes were crafted from a wide variety of materials including wood, horn, tortoiseshell, papier-mache, silver, and bone, often featuring fitted lids and protective linings.

Authentication relies on examining the type of wood, the ageing of the clear varnish or lacquer, hand-drawn ink characteristics under magnification, and traditional joinery or construction methods appropriate to the period.

Antique small objects like snuff boxes add historic character when displayed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or coffee tables, often placed inside glass display domes or styled alongside stacks of art books.

Preservation requires keeping wooden and lacquered items out of direct sunlight and away from extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning them only with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding chemical polishes.
