Tartanware, also known as Tartan work, gained immense popularity during the Regency and Victorian periods, largely driven by Sir Walter Scotts romanticisation of Scottish culture and Royal visits to Scotland. Items were decorated with authentic clan tartans using specialised transfer printing or painted paper veneers.

Antique tea caddies were typically constructed from solid timbers such as mahogany, pine, or papier-mache, often lined with foil or thin sheet metal to preserve the aroma of expensive tea leaves. Exterior surfaces were finished with decorative papers, veneers, or intricate inlay work, frequently fitted with brass handles and locks.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction techniques, hand-cut dovetail joints, genuine brass hardware with appropriate patination, and early paper types with hand-finished varnishes. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples often utilise machine-printed papers and different construction adhesives.

This piece can be styled as a focal point on a credenza, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to introduce rich colour, historical texture, and pattern to a room. Its traditional Scottish motifs complement both classic interiors and eclectic, collected spaces.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of coloured tartan papers and protect the wood from extreme humidity fluctuations. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid the application of modern polishes or cleaning solvents.
