Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the Hizen province of northwestern Kyushu. It became prominent during the Edo period in the late 17th century, highly sought after by European nobility.

Authentic Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired white porcelain clay, traditionally decorated with an underglaze cobalt blue and an overglaze iron red, frequently accented with gilding and supplementary green, yellow, or black enamels.

Authentic antique pieces often display slight irregularities in the hand-painted brushwork, visible crazing or wear within the glaze, unglazed foot rims showing the body paste, and occasionally kiln marks or hand-brushed makers symbols on the base.

These pieces can be used as focal points on a mantelpiece, console table, or open shelving unit, contrasting effectively against minimalist backgrounds to highlight their intricate patterns and rich colour palette.

Preserve antique ceramics by keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent enamel fading, dusting gently with a soft dry brush, and avoiding immersion in water or the use of chemical cleaning agents.
