French gilt mirrors featuring figural and cherub carvings largely draw inspiration from the Baroque and Rococo periods of the 17th and 18th centuries, where elaborate, nature-inspired ornamentation and putti symbols represented opulence and classical art movements.

Authentic period pieces are traditionally constructed from carved soft or hard wood substrates, such as pine or oak, coated in a layer of gesso, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding techniques with genuine gold leaf.

Authenticity is identified by examining the construction joints, hand-carved details, the presence of foxing or age spots on mercury or early silvered mirror plates, and the microscopic crackling or patina of the gesso and gold leaf over time.

Interior designers often lean into the principle of contrast by positioning a large, ornate gilt mirror against minimalist or neutral walls, or resting it on the floor as a freestanding piece to anchor a room with architectural weight.

Gilded surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding all chemical solvents, abrasive cleaners, or direct moisture to protect the fragile gold leaf layer.
