Burr walnut is a figured wood veneer harvested from the irregular growth knot of a walnut tree, highly prized in cabinet-making during the Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco periods for its intricate grain patterns.

Authentic period bedside cabinets typically feature solid secondary woods like pine or oak carcasses, hand-applied burr walnut veneers, dovetail joints on drawers, and cast brass hardware.

Authentication involves inspecting drawer construction for hand-cut dovetails, checking for natural shrinkage cracks in the veneer, examining wear patterns on the feet, and verifying period-appropriate brass handles and locks.

These pieces add warmth and texture to contemporary bedrooms when paired with clean-lined modern beds, contrasting against neutral walls to highlight the rich wood grain and decorative carving.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate furniture wax.
