The Windsor chair originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular furniture-making traditions that involved inserting spindles directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditionally, Windsor chairs feature a combination of native timbers, typically employing a dense hardwood like elm for the carved seat, ash or oak for the bent parts and legs, and beech or birch for the spindles.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century generally show signs of hand-tooling, distinct tool marks on the saddle seat, wedged tenon joints, and natural patination and wear consistent with age.

This piece can be used as a contrasting accent seat around a modern dining table or as a standalone reading chair in a living space to add warmth, history, and texture.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a specialist microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
