A vinaigrette is a small pocket container used during the Georgian era to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar, which was inhaled to mask unpleasant odours or prevent fainting.

They were typically crafted from sterling silver, often featuring gilt interiors to protect the metal from the corrosive acetic acid in the vinegar, and equipped with a hinged, pierced grille.

Authentic pieces usually bear British silver hallmarks, including a makers mark, standard mark, assay office mark, and date letter, alongside a finely pierced internal grille.

These small objects can be displayed on a mantelpiece, within a glass cabinet, or on a desk as a curated decorative accent alongside other miniature antiques.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth to preserve the patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the delicate piercing and gilding.
