FAQs

The Napoleon III or Second Empire style, spanning the mid-to-late 19th century in France, draws heavily on eclectic revivals of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI aesthetics, often featuring exuberant ornamentation, complex cartouche crests, and rich gilding.

Authentic period mirrors are typically constructed with a carved wooden or gesso-over-wood frame, finished with gold leaf or gilt paint, and fitted with hand-silvered glass featuring bevelled edges.

Authenticity is indicated by age-related characteristics such as foxing or oxidation on the mercury or silvered mirror plate, hand-carved wooden construction beneath the gesso, and traditional joinery on the reverse frame.

An ornate gilt mirror works effectively as a contrasting focal point in a minimalist room, hung above a modern sideboard or fireplace to add historical depth and reflect natural light.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush. Avoid all chemical cleaning agents, water, or abrasive cloths to prevent stripping the delicate gold leaf finish.
