An enamel decorated in the Japanese style Riley's Toffee Tin dating from around 1910. The tin is in reasonable condition but has a small dent (pictured) on the edge of the lid. This doesn't prevent the lid closing and could probably be taken out with care.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian decorative tin originates from around 1910 in the Chinoiserie style. The rectangular tinplate body carries a black finish with detailed lithographed illustrations in gold and green, including Chinoiserie figures, a pine tree motif, a gold foliage border, and a crane illustration on the hinged lid. Visible signs of age include a small dent on the edge of the lid, which allows the lid to still close properly. The piece measures 8.5 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 13.5 cm deep. It sits well on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study to store small everyday items.

FAQs

Chinoiserie advertising tins are decorative tinplate containers manufactured primarily from the late 19th through the mid-20th century, featuring Western artistic interpretations of East Asian landscapes, figures, and botanical motifs.

These tins were created by applying multi-colour offset lithographic prints directly onto flat sheets of tin-plated iron or steel before cutting, folding, and shaping the metal into functional boxes.

Authentic period tins display rolled wire rims, folded corner seams rather than spot welds, age-appropriate surface oxidisation, stamp-embossed manufacturer markings, and natural paint wear.

A decorative metal tin serves as an ideal accent piece on a sideboard top, desk, or bookshelf, functioning as a practical catch-all for small accessories while introducing visual historical texture.

Display tins in a dry climate-controlled area to prevent rust development, dusting gently with a soft microfibre cloth while avoiding moisture, solvents, and abrasive polish that could damage the surface paint.
