French Four Glass Regulator Mantle Clock with the Moon-phase Dial

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale an 1890s solid brass French crystal regulator mantel clock that is in stunning condition for the age with an original brass case and fully serviced eight-day striking movement run via original Ellicot pendulum with the ultra rare moon-phase dial which marks the 29.5 lunar days by the x2 small stars at the top of each moon.

This clock was made in France by E.S Ed. Serin and signed on the back plate.

This clock is simply stunning the case shines in the sunlight and is a very large and heavy clock this clock is insured for £8000

The Case

The case is in solid very shiny brass very heavy and stands 31cm high x 18cm wide with a depth of 14cm it is in very good original condition very shiny and has been very well looked after over the years, with 8mm thick beveled glass on all four sides, both doors open with ease and all glass is free of chips or marks all panels again are in mint condition.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition with a working moon phase center and with the bold black Roman numerals, the clock set off with the original black ornate hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strikes striking the hours and halves on a large sweet gong a real quality movement, which still retains the original key and massive brass gilt Ellicot pendulum.

The movement keeps good time over the eight days; she was fully stripped down ultrasonic cleaned new springs hand polished than all screws were re-blued then oiled tested and run around three years ago.( the work cost over £1350.00 on this clock alone, just been serviced again running very strong)

All the wheelwork is ultra fine the cutting out is of top quality this would have been a very expensive clock back in the day and I think one of the best for sale at the moment by far.

Please do not miss this one to see a clock like this again you could wait a very long time it is stunning in the flesh.

Overall a very beautiful rare clock in its original condition that’s looking great on display keeping a great time.

The photos do not do justice to this lovely old clock do not miss out on this one please find another for sale happy to have the clock back if not 100% happy.

I will post worldwide at your risk but collection would be best.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French four-glass regulator clock is a 19th-century horological timepiece featuring four clear glass panels set within a brass frame, designed to showcase the internal mechanical movement and pendulum.

These clocks are constructed using brass for the case frame and movement, thick bevelled glass panels, an enamel dial, and steel or temperature-compensated pendulums.

Authentic examples typically feature stamped maker marks on the rear movement backplate, hand-cut gear teeth, heavy bevelled glass panels, and a mercury or twin-vial pendulum design.

Place the clock centrally on a marble mantelpiece, structured sideboard, or curated bookshelf alongside contemporary art to create a point of interest.

Keep the clock on a flat, level surface away from direct heat and dampness, clean the glass with a dry microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
