Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A grande sonnerie carriage clock is a 19th-century portable timepiece featuring a striking mechanism that automatically chimes the hours and quarters at every quarter hour. Originally created for travellers, these spring-driven mechanical clocks feature rectangular brass cases, glass viewing panels, and top carrying handles.

Traditional carriage clocks are constructed with solid brass or gilt-brass casings, thick bevelled glass side panels, and white enamel dials featuring hand-painted Roman or Arabic numerals. The internal mechanical movements rely on brass plates, steel arbors, and balance wheel escapements.

Authentic carriage clocks feature hand-cut gears, platform escapements visible through a top glass aperture, and heavy brass construction with sharp bevelled glass edges. Maker signatures, hallmarks, or serial numbers are typically stamped onto the back plate or dial face.

Position a brass carriage clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, executive office desk, or open bookcase to introduce historic warmth and structured metallic contrast. Its clean geometric lines harmonize effectively alongside contemporary books, framed prints, and minimal decor.

Keep the clock situated away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and active heat sources to prevent dial crazing and movement corrosion. Dust the outer casing gently using a soft microfibre cloth without liquid brass polishes, and arrange professional horological servicing every five years.
