FAQs

Nineteenth-century French mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden frames, gesso detailing, and original painted or gilded finishes that reflect the classical aesthetics and craftsmanship of the period.

These pieces were constructed using solid timber frames, often carved from pine or hardwood, assembled with traditional joinery, and fitted with mercury or early silvered float glass plates.

Authenticity is identified through age-related patina on the frame, hand-carved tool marks, original backboards, and foxing or oxidation present within the vintage glass.

Positioning the mirror opposite a window maximizes natural light and creates a sense of spatial depth, while contrasting the distressed painted frame against modern neutral walls adds textural interest.

Preserve the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the painted wood, and using a soft, dry cloth for dusting the frame.
