Pair Of Early 17th Century Derbyshire Chairs In Oak

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Vicky Thomas Antiques

Here are a majestic matching pair of 17th Century carved Derbyshire chairs in Oak.

Both chairs are heavy with original plank seats, and richly decorated legs and back crests with the head of a bearded gentleman on one between the carved date of 1620, and the head of a lady in a ruffled bonnet on the other. I wonder if they were perhaps a wedding gift so that the happy couple could sit by the fireside together?!

Both chairs have a rich dark patina, with golden highlights where hands have held onto them over the centuries, and bear the surface wear that is to be expected with furniture of this considerable age. There are a few small historical splits in the wood - all illustrated in the photographs. Both chairs have been crafted using wooden pegs, but at some point in their lives, small supports have been added underneath the seats to strengthen them.

Delivery to mainland UK is free of charge, and for other destinations I can help to arrange for a quote for shipping costs.
